Extremely knowledgeable and caring doctor whose goal is to understand what the patient is experiencing and together looking for medical solution. The practice is also extremely efficient. No being shouted at across a packed waiting room with demands for your insurance card or method of payment. No demands asking you "why" you need to see the doctor. Sojourn should be standard not the exception!
Dr. Patrick Fillnow is the kind of doctor that is largely not available anymore given our current health care constraints. So, I jumped at the opportunity to follow this new model of direct primary care. This is my second year with Sojourn and I am amazed how available Dr. Fillnow is for me, even for sometimes mundane questions and things. I had an appointment today and he personally spent 30 minutes with me. He's caring, thorough, inquisitive, and solutions oriented and I couldn't imagine being with any other doctor!
It was so refreshing to sit down in a comfortable setting (in a comfortable chair in an office, across from a desk) and talk about health concerns and goals with no concern for how much time I had to discuss things that were important to me. Dr. Fillnow was attentive and took the time to understand my specific health needs and concerns. I felt genuinely heard and cared for. The next day I remembered something I’d forgotten to discuss, of course on a Saturday, and got a very prompt and helpful response to my concern. I’m so very grateful to have found Sojourn DPC.
Dr Fillnow has been my dr for many years. I followed him to Sojourn and it has been an experience I have loved. He LISTENS to you. Takes time to listen, research and examine you in a comfortable setting. Asks for your input into your own care. Will answer a text or e-mail quickly and get you in to see him quickly. No waiting in an office with many patients. The personal relationship is very inviting. He is always willing to help. I suggest you try this format. It has worked 100% for me.
The buck finally stopped here. Dr Fillnow would probably be a great choice of primary care provider, even if you encountered him still just fighting the good fight in the Novant or Atrium systems with everyone else—i.e., even if you only had 7-10 minutes to meet with him like you do with most PCPs in the traditional systems. He listens to everything with genuine concern and doesn't preface or posture about what he thinks. He makes you feel like an equal partner in the shared effort to advocate for your health and wellbeing. But because Sojourn is direct primary care, you get much more than you could possibly get from the traditional systems—more time to just relax, start from the beginning, dot all of your I's and cross your T's. If you forget about something, it's no problem to just email the doctor directly, because he's just a person with an email address and a phone number. There's no wall in the way, real or metaphorical—just a conversation between people, who are equal in dignity and respect, the way primary care should be, and really needs to be.
I hope this style of primary care is commonplace in the near future, that everyone can have the opportunity to enjoy, and if you're considering signing up, I definitely recommend it.
